Nairobi, Kenya - Tax Justice Network Africa (TJNA) is set to commence the 2023 International Tax Justice Academy (ITJA) training program on 5 September 2023. The academy, a flagship program of TJNA aimed at advancing tax justice in Africa, will bring together 38 participants across the continent as a new cohort of tax justice advocates.

Designed as a pan-African initiative, ITJA, launched in 2016, seeks to bridge the existing knowledge gap on tax justice champions in Africa and offers foundational training to participants new to tax justice advocacy.

Since its inception, ITJA has reached over 320 participants drawn from CSOs, trade unions, media, and academia. It has since contributed to raising awareness, strengthening policy capacity, and public mobilisation. The ITJA 2023 is set up to address and raise awareness on key fiscal development issues in Africa on the theme: “Building the next generation of tax justice champions’’.

ITJA 2023 has structured its engagement through a training curriculum that will address the capacity needs of learners at basic, intermediary, and advanced levels. This year's training will combine online sessions running in September with one week of physical sessions in Nairobi, Kenya, from September 25th to 27th, 2023.

During the training, a series of introductory topics will be covered, including:

  • Foundations of Taxation: Laying the groundwork for comprehending taxes.
  • Understanding Tax Justice: Unveiling the principles and significance of tax justice in fostering equitable societies.
  • Foundations of International Taxation: Exploring the global dimensions of taxation and their impact on local economies.
  • Tax Transparency and Accountability: Navigating aspects of transparency and responsibility in tax matters.
  • Foundations of Tax Expenditure: Delving into tax expenditure and its far-reaching implications.
  • Natural Resource Taxation: Understanding the complexities surrounding the taxation of natural resources.

ITJA 2023 aims to generate knowledge on critical areas around tax and create a platform to deepen participants' understanding of tax governance and its relation to economic development, poverty reduction, and social justice.
