December 20 marks the International Human Solidarity Day, dedicated to reinforcing the global value of unity, shared responsibility, and collective action. Since its proclamation in 2005, the day has served as a reminder that humanity’s greatest challenges, from poverty to inequality, can only be overcome when we work together with a common purpose.

This year’s theme, “Solidarity for Sustainable Development: Uniting Communities for a Shared Future,” highlights the urgent need for stronger partnerships that uplift marginalised populations, promote social inclusion, and ensure equitable access to opportunities. It emphasises that sustainable development is not merely a policy agenda, but a collective journey anchored in global cooperation.

At Tax Justice Network Africa (TJNA), solidarity is at the heart of our core values. Sustainable development cannot be achieved without fair financial systems, accountable governance, and the protection of public resources.

Across the continent, billions of dollars continue to leave African economies each year through illicit financial flows (IFFs), tax avoidance, and exploitative corporate practices, draining resources that should fund education, health care, social protection, climate resilience and other essential public services.

When public resources are lost, it is the most vulnerable who bear the burden, deepening inequality and undermining social justice. Solidarity, therefore, demands confronting these structural injustices.

“Solidarity is the backbone of social justice. When we unite to challenge systemic inequalities, whether in tax governance, resource extraction, or global financial systems, we build a foundation for a fairer, more inclusive future,” noted TJNA’s Senior Policy Officer, Mr. Ishmael Zulu.

International Human Solidarity Day highlights the importance of inclusive participation. Through initiatives such as the Pan‑African Conference on Illicit Financial Flows and Taxation (PAC), the Africa Parliamentary Network on Illicit Financial Flows (APNIFFT), and the International Tax Justice Academy (ITJA), TJNA strengthens cross‑border collaboration and amplifies citizen voices demanding transparency, accountability, and equity. These collective spaces embody the spirit of this year’s theme by uniting diverse communities and stakeholders around a shared development agenda.

Achieving sustainable development requires that youth, women, community groups, and civil society organisations meaningfully engage in shaping policy decisions. When these voices are heard, governance becomes more responsive, development becomes more people‑centred, and public resources are more likely to serve those who need them most.

On this International Human Solidarity Day 2025, TJNA urges governments, institutions, and communities to reaffirm their commitment to shared responsibility. This means enacting transparent and progressive tax systems, honoring international commitments, strengthening public institutions, and confronting systemic enablers of inequality such as illicit financial flows and tax abuse. Only through solidarity in action can we build a continent where prosperity is shared, dignity is protected, and opportunities are accessible to all.
