TJNA will spotlight civil society’s role in corporate accountability at the United Nations University - IIGH and Third World Network Symposium which will be held from 22 to 24 April 2025 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
This symposium will convene over 100 health professionals, researchers, and civil society actors to explore the increasing role of powerful private actors (PPAs) in global health governance. Discussions will focus on critical issues such as the financialisation of healthcare and the corporate influence over public policy.
Co-organised by United Nations University - IIGH and the Third World Network, with support from the World Health Organization, the Collective for the Political Determinants of Health, and Oxfam, the three-day event will examine the conduct, reach, and impact of PPAs in the global health landscape, and consider strategies to counteract their detrimental effects on health systems and governance.
TJNA will be also participating as follows:
Session: Strengthening corporate accountability in food systems
Date: Wednesday, 23rd April 2025
Time: 9am-11am
Speaker: John Thomi, TJNA
The session will explore the critical role of civil society organizations (CSOs) in enhancing corporate accountability within food systems. CSOs are key actors in holding powerful private entities to account, particularly in the sphere of tax justice. Their efforts are essential to restoring fiscal sovereignty and challenging the harmful effects of a neoliberal global financial architecture. This involves influencing tax policy, opposing exploitative investment practices, and advancing international tax transparency.
