Tax Justice Network Africa will be participating in the third edition of the African Conference on Debt and Development (AfCoDD III), which will take place from August 30 to September 1, 2023, at the Radisson Blue Hotel in Dakar, Senegal.

The African Conference on Debt and Development (AfCoDD) is an annual forum that brings together political, technical, and civic leaders from Africa to deliberate and agree on commitments and actions that will advance macroeconomic sustainability in Africa as the continent seeks to achieve the structural transformation envisaged in the African Union Agenda 2063.

The AfCoDD III is organised by the African Forum and Network on Debt and Development (AFRODAD) alongside other partners, including TJNA. The theme for this year’s event is “Reimagining, Rethinking, Reorganising, and Remobilising for an African World Order” and seeks to advance the need for a transformation of the global financial system that will enable Africa to interact in an ever-interconnected world and play a critical role in unearthing her potential.

TJNA’s Executive Director Chenai Mukumba and Policy Officer Ishmael Zulu will be participating in the conference program as follows;

  • Session 6, Thursday 31st August 2023: An overview of emerging schools of thought and dynamics in Debt Discourse in recent times & significance of research, Chenai Mukumba as a panellist

  • Session 9, Thursday 31st August 2023: Africa’s Regional Debt Outlook Amid Poly-Crisis, Chenai Mukumba as session moderator

TJNA will also be hosting a session on 31st August 2023 themed “The Interlinkages between Debt, Illicit Financial Flows and Inequality in the ECOWAS Region in the post-Covid-19 Era”. The session will feature discussions and a report launch that will highlight the effect of Illicit Financial Flows (IFFs) on a country’s debt (both corporate and public) as well as show the effect of debt on inequality across and within countries. The report will also present data on the ratio of lost revenue to spending in health, education, and social protection for selected countries in the region.
